چکیده

A system of weakly magnetically coupled oscillating blades is studied experimentally, computationally, and theoretically. It is found that when the uncoupled natural frequencies of the blades are nearly equal, the normal modes produced by the coupling are almost impossible to find experimentally if the random variation level in the system parameters is on the order of ͑or larger than͒ the relative differences between mode frequencies. But if the uncoupled natural frequencies are made to vary ͑detuned͒ in a smooth way such that the total relative spread in natural frequency exceeds the random variations, normal modes are rather easy to find. And if the detuned uncoupled frequencies of the system are parabolically distributed, the modes are found to be shaped like Hermite functions.

Stochastic switching in delay-coupled oscillators.

A delay is known to induce multistability in periodic systems. Under influence of noise, coupled oscillators can switch between coexistent orbits with different frequencies and different oscillation patterns. For coupled phase oscillators we reduce the delay system to a nondelayed Langevin equation, which allows us to analytically compute the distribution of frequencies and their corresponding ...

Cavity mode emission in weakly coupled quantum dot--cavity systems.

We study the origin of bright leaky-cavity mode emission and its influence on photon statistics in weakly coupled quantum dot - semiconductor cavity systems, which consist of a planar photonic-crystal and several quantum dots. We present experimental measurements that show that when the system is excited above the barrier energy, then bright cavity mode emissions with nonzero detuning are domin...

Extreme sensitivity to detuning for globally coupled phase oscillators.

We discuss the sensitivity of a population of coupled oscillators to differences in their natural frequencies, i.e., to detuning. We argue that for three or more oscillators, one can get great sensitivity even if the coupling is strong. For N globally coupled phase oscillators we find there can be bifurcation to extreme sensitivity, where frequency locking can be destroyed by arbitrarily small ...

Analytic Conditions for Targeted Energy Transfer between Nonlinear Oscillators or Discrete Breathers

It is well known that any amount of energy injected in a harmonic oscillator which is resonant and weakly coupled with a second harmonic oscillator, tunnels back and forth between these two oscillators. When the two oscillators are anharmonic, the amplitude dependence of their frequencies breaks, in general, any eventual initial resonance so that no substantial energy transfer occurs unless, ex...

Dynamics on Networks of Cluster States for Globally Coupled Phase Oscillators

Systems of globally coupled phase oscillators can have robust attractors that are heteroclinic networks. We investigate such a heteroclinic network between partially synchronized states where the phases cluster into three groups. For the coupling considered there exist 30 different three-cluster states in the case of five oscillators. We study the structure of the heteroclinic network and demon...
